Jungle Carpet Pythons - FAQs

Dr Laura Coughran • June 19, 2022

In today's post, I answer FAQs about Jungle Carpet Pythons, a stunning species of python endemic to the far north forests of Queensland.

If you have any general questions that haven't been answered, or would like to hear about a particular topic, contact me and I'll do my best to answer any of your burning reptile questions.

Now, onto the Jungle Carpet Python FAQ - and a gallery of some recent shots taken of my male high yellow Tiger Jungle Carpet, Draco.

Jungle carpet pythons can make good pets, depending on the individual snakes. Admittedly compared to other Morelia species, they do have a bit of a reputation for being snappier or more defensive than others. Having said this, my own Jungle’s Draco and Rogue are quite placid and haven’t (yet) bitten me!

Jungle pythons can vary in size from 1.8-2.4m in length, with some localities growing larger than others.

Short answer – Yes! Any python has the capability of biting, but Jungle carpets do have a bad reputation for being snappy and defensive, compared to many other Australian python species.

We can’t give a straight answer to this question- it depends on how regularly they’re fed, and what sized prey they are offered!
